Prayer Pillars

14 pillars without which prayer is not valid (according to the majority of scholars)

1 Intention (Niyyah)
Intention is in the heart, uttering it is an innovation
Intention is the purpose of the heart, and it is a condition for the validity of prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Actions are but by intentions." Intention is in the heart, and uttering it is an innovation not reported from the Prophet ﷺ.
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
Intention is in the heart, do not utter it, as this was not reported from the Prophet ﷺ.
2 Takbirat al-Ihram
Allah is the Greatest
Takbirat al-Ihram is saying "Allahu Akbar" at the beginning of prayer, and it is a pillar without which the prayer is not valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The key to prayer is purification, its beginning is takbir, and its end is taslim."
Pillar 📚 Narrated by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi
Raise your hands to the level of your shoulders or ears when saying takbir, as the Prophet ﷺ used to do.
3 Standing (Qiyam)
Standing in obligatory prayer for those able
Standing is a pillar in obligatory prayers for those who are able, while in voluntary prayers sitting is permissible. Allah says: "Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with devotion."
Pillar 📖 Surah Al-Baqarah: 238
If you are sick and cannot stand, pray sitting; if you cannot, then on your side.
4 Reciting Al-Fatihah
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds
Reciting Al-Fatihah is a pillar in every rak'ah, and the prayer is not valid without it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book."
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
Make sure to recite Al-Fatihah completely in every rak'ah, and ponder its great meanings.
5 Bowing (Ruku)
Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty
Ruku is bowing so that the hands can reach the knees, while glorifying Allah and saying "Subhana Rabbiyal Azim". Allah says: "O you who have believed, bow and prostrate."
Pillar 📖 Surah Al-Hajj: 77
Be at ease in your bowing, keep your back straight, and place your hands on your knees with fingers spread.
6 Rising from Ruku
Allah hears those who praise Him - Our Lord, to You is all praise
The worshipper rises from bowing saying: "Sami Allahu liman hamidah" (for the imam and one praying alone), then says: "Rabbana wa lakal hamd".
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
If you are praying behind an imam, say only "Rabbana wa lakal hamd" and do not say "Sami Allahu liman hamidah".
7 Prostration (Sujud)
Glory be to my Lord, the Most High
Prostration is on seven body parts: the forehead along with the nose, the two hands, the two knees, and the ends of the feet. One says: "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la".
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
Make abundant supplication during prostration, as the servant is closest to his Lord in this position.
8 Rising from Sujud
Allah is the Greatest
One rises from prostration saying takbir, then sits between the two prostrations with tranquility.
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
Do not rush in rising, but be at ease until every bone returns to its place.
9 Sitting between Prostrations
My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me
One sits between the two prostrations with tranquility and says: "Rabbi ighfir li, Rabbi ighfir li" (My Lord, forgive me).
Pillar 📚 Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah
You may also say: "O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, restore me, and provide for me."
10 Tranquility (Tumaninah)
Tranquility
Tumaninah is stillness in every pillar of prayer until every limb returns to its place. The Prophet ﷺ said to the one who prayed poorly: "The prayer of any of you is not complete until he does that."
Pillar 📚 Narrated by Al-Bukhari
Do not rush in prayer, for the worst thief is the one who steals from his prayer (not completing its bowing and prostration).
11 Final Tashahhud
All greetings, prayers, and good deeds are for Allah
One sits for the final Tashahhud after the last rak'ah and recites the greetings and the Ibrahimic prayers.
Pillar 📚 Agreed upon
During Tashahhud, point with your index finger when saying "illa Allah" in the testimony, as this is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
12 Blessings on the Prophet ﷺ
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad
Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ in the final Tashahhud is a pillar according to the Shafi'is and Ahmad in one narration, and obligatory according to the majority.
Pillar (according to Shafi'is) 📚 Narrated by Al-Bukhari
Complete the Ibrahimic prayer: "As You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious."
13 Order (Tarteeb)
Order
The pillars must be ordered as they came in the Prophetic Sunnah; whoever intentionally precedes one pillar over another, his prayer is invalid.
Pillar 📚 Narrated by Al-Bukhari: "Pray as you have seen me praying"
Maintain the order of prayer as the Prophet ﷺ taught us: standing, then bowing, then prostrating...
14 Tasleem (Salutation)
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah
The worshipper gives salutation to the right: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah", and to the left similarly, marking the end of the prayer.
Pillar 📚 Narrated by Muslim: "And its ending is tasleem"
Intend with the tasleem to exit the prayer, and intend peace upon the angels and fellow worshippers.
