The Word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the ultimate source of guidance and legislation for all humanity
Begin Your Quranic JourneyThe Holy Quran is the literal word of Allah revealed to the final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in clear Arabic. It has been transmitted to us through continuous chains of narration (Tawatur), its recitation is an act of worship. It begins with Surah Al-Fatihah and ends with Surah An-Nas, revealed over 23 years as the final and most complete divine scripture.
The Quran is known by many names, each reflecting a different aspect of its greatness: Al-Quran (The Recitation), Al-Kitab (The Book), Al-Furqan (The Criterion), Al-Dhikr (The Reminder), An-Nur (The Light), Al-Huda (The Guidance), Ar-Rahmah (The Mercy), Ash-Shifa (The Healing), Al-Maw'idhah (The Admonition), Al-Hikmah (The Wisdom), and At-Tanzil (The Revelation). The name "Al-Quran" appears in the Quran itself 70 times.
The Quran is an eternal miracle, divinely preserved from any distortion. It is comprehensive, addressing all aspects of life, and remains relevant for all times and places. Its eloquence and style are inimitable, serving as a healing for hearts and guidance for all humanity. Allah Himself promised its protection: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian."
Surah Al-Isra - Verse 9
Revelation began to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Cave of Hira during Ramadan, 610 CE. The first verses revealed were: "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Surah Al-Alaq: 1). Revelation continued intermittently over 23 years, addressing events as they occurred.
Lasting 13 years, approximately two-thirds of the Quran was revealed during this period. Makkan verses are characterized by their brevity, focus on foundational beliefs (Tawheed), the resurrection, and addressing the intellect and emotions. This period established the core creed and built the Islamic character.
Lasting 10 years after the Hijrah, Madinan verses are longer and focus on legislation, including jihad, personal status laws, financial transactions, and detailed rulings. The laws of worship, commerce, and penal codes were revealed during this period.
The final verses revealed to the Prophet ﷺ include: "Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" (Al-Maidah: 3). The Quran was completed just days before the Prophet's death.
The Quran was first compiled into a single volume during the caliphate of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq after the Battle of Yamamah, where many memorizers were martyred. The standardized Uthmani script was established during the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan to ensure uniformity across the Islamic world.

This scholarly division emerged during the Ottoman era and is not divinely ordained. Further subdivisions into quarters (Rub' al-Hizb) aid in memorization and review.
